Shhh, Daddy is trying to make money

I’ve heard some people say they can’t work out of their homes because of their kids. I’m one of the lucky ones that when I’m on the phone my kids know that it is a time to be quiet because Daddy is trying to make money.

There is also many times when I’m in the car and the phone rings and all three kids are in the back seat talking. My kids immediately go quiet and sometimes I’ll hear from the back seat “Shhh, Daddy is trying to make money” I love to hear that, but do my clients? You bet, they don’t want to hear kids during a business transaction.

The Clark Family in the Columbia Gorge

There are two incidences that I can think of where I was on the phone with clients with the kids in the car and I was talking to the client for more than 30 minutes and they both at the times asked me something about my kids and I said “Let me ask” Both times, they said, “they are with you? They are so quiet, I didn’t hear a thing, that is some impressive parenting if you can keep kids quiet for 30 minutes.”

I have to say I’m very proud of my kids and how they understand business and how them being quiet if even for 30 minutes can help bring money in to the home. This is my public thank you to my kids, even though I thank them daily, I think the world needs to understand how important my kids are to me and that they are just as much a part of my business as I am.

I hope one day my kids can follow in my foot steps and start their own businesses as I truly believe owning your own business is the only true way to financial freedom.

I think that it is great that you children respect your business and are quiet when the phone rings.  What is even more admirable is that your clients ask about your children and respect your family as well.  I often work from home and I have three children as well.  It can be difficult in the car, but we are working on it.  Thank you for sharing!

Keep smiling,

Karen

Todd - Impressive!  Perhaps you can take a trip to Austin and educate a few agents in the area I work with on a daily basis.  As a non-parent speaking, it drives me insane to be speaking with another professional when I can only hear their child speaking, not them.  I'm sure that will change once I have kids but regardless you are absolutely correct.... you must install respect at an early age.  Kudos to your kids for appreciating your time and allowing you to shine as a true professional.

Todd - My boys also know when the phone rings they need to be quiet although I'm not sure they could keep quiet in the car for 30 minutes, that's impressive.

I think that you give them a lot of respect by giving them quality time, so they return the favor when you get interrupted.

I know your kids.

They are every bit (the asset) you say they are.

Hi Todd - Having well-behaved and respectful kids isn't just luck.  You clearly have trained them well.  And not just to be quiet when you are on the phone, but to appreciate that what you are doing is what pays for the things they enjoy - like food, a roof over their heads, etc.  Good job!

Todd - Your great kids are the results of "great parenting".   I can relate to everything you said.  My son is now 16, and he's been a Realtor's son ever since he can remember.   I keep trying to get him to be my "IT" consultant....  :)

Todd,

Love the Shh, be quiet Daddy is trying to make money.  One of my kids is already planning to take over the business, well, that's on Monday, Wednesday, Fridays, on the other days he is going to be an engineer.

Fun what they learn from you, even if you aren't trying to teach them, they are sponges!

All the best, Michelle

How cute!  I see from your photos all of the place you take your kids. You can bet they appreciate it and know that it takes money to take them where you do.

I think I need to start that cool phrase when my phone rings. :-)  Working from home has its advantages. Seeing the kids more often is certainly at the top of the list. My kids are 12 and 13 so they dont make as much noise, but they have their moments.... especially when their friends come over. I'm able to close the door though and they are pretty good about keeping it down.

What a nice tribute to your kids, the apple doesn't fall too far from the tree!

Todd - I'm curious if there is a bribe or a threat when dad gets on the phone for a business call?  My kids, all 5 of them, have also been great when dad gets on the phone with a business call while the family is in the car, although I've never used the "daddy is making money" statement, I think I'll give that a try!

Jared, there is no bribe or threat. I think it just has been dad has always owned his own business since they were babies. The statement "Daddy is making money" came from them not me.

"Daddy is making money" came from them?  I love it!  You and their mom obviously did a great job raising them.
