I'm sorry dad, I'm tired and now I know why you hated this time of year. Tonight I spent over 5 hours working with my son on his space derby ship for the space derby tomorrow night. I had never heard of the space derby. When I was a scout it was always the pine wood derby, but my song was given a blog of wood a bunch of rubber bands and a propeller.
I personally didn't realize how hard this was until tonight when working on my son's project. Now I know the kids are supposed to it themselves, but just as my dad realized, there is no way an 8 year old would be able to do that without help. In case you don't know what a space derby is, here is a video from a troop last year and I hope tomorrow night to have video of my son's troop and hopefully the story of a win.

I had no idea what a space derby was. Great video and post.
Todd - first - very good video. I have never seen that before. Looks pretty cool - but it also looke like a cool competition for adults - and not much to do with 8 year olds ;-) Good luck!!
A new era in scouting I guess.....I'm from the old fashioned "Will you help me with my pine wood derby racer, Dad?"
Looks like fun.....and highly scientific.
Todd, Believe it or not my cub scout troop did this back in the late 60's. I just had my old rocket in my hand earlier today as I was cleaning up my basement. I hadn't thought about this in years. Thanks for the memories and the video.
Hi Todd, I've watched my grandson compete in the pine wood competition. He is coming to visit in a few days and I've hung one of his favorite paintings in the room where he'll be sleeping, of a space scene I just blogged on yesterday (great coincidence). I'll have to show him your video, very cool
Todd, I had never heard of a space derby before now. It seems that these space ships would be easier to transport than a racing car.
Todd,
I just told Jason Crouch: "you're making memories that will be with the older three for the rest of their lives. You're setting standards that will be reflected in how your grand kids will be raised."
So are you Todd! So are you. Well done!
Bill
Never heard of a space derby but it sounds like it's up there with the dreaded science fair! LOL. Thank God my daughter had her father to help her. Good luck to you both!
I had never heard of a Space Derby either! Thanks for the lesson and it looks like a blast! Yes, Dads and Moms always do "help" out quite a bit. Enjoy the memories!
Yikes, I empathize with you and parents in general....I don't have any kids *just furbabies!, and would have a hard time with lots of this stuff!!
Todd, That brings back a load of memories...
Are you having a great Tuesday yet?
Paul
Todd - My sons have also had projects where I had to help because there was no way they could do it on their own, so I know the feeling.
My oldest son recently built a volcano for extra credit, he didn't need my help other than taking him to the store to buy the supplies and I must admit I was a little disappointed I didn't get to help.
Todd,
Great post and way cool video. My former church still has the annual pinewood derby which the kids seem to love. But his space derby is really over the top. Amazing to read that someone had this back in the late 60's. Best of luck to your son.

Todd, this is soooo precious. Are times changing? We went through the Pinewood Derby with our son . . ."Space Derby" ? !
Will be watching for that winning video tomorrow! How neat that father and son can workon this together.
