Why criticizing our president is so important!

Yes, this is a political post, and you won’t see too many of these from me, but I want to let everyone I know that criticizing our president is part of our right as Americans. We must use the free speech right when we feel something is wrong in this country.

Now, I’m not saying this about our current president, I’m saying this about any and all presidents past, president and future! No matter how I vote, I will in some way, criticize “MY PRESIDENT”. Yes, no matter who is in office, if I voted for them or not, they are my president. Even if I do not agree with them they are still my president.

White House

One of the things I hated most about the Bush presidency was all the bumper stickers that said “Not my president” Well, yes he is your president unless you are giving up your citizenship to this great country we live in. Now you may not agree with a president or their policies, but they are still your president.

But, this country is great because we have the right to criticize our president and other elected officials without having to be worried about being put in jail or killed for our opinion. America is a free country and everyone has an opinion. Our politicians were voted in by us, to represent us, and it is our job to make sure they know what we want from them.

Every four years we are given the opportunity to tell a president, or any other elected official, if they are doing a good job, or if they are listening to us by telling them they can stay and continue what they are doing or we can vote them out and elect someone else.

No matter what your political preference is, I suggest you stand up for your own beliefs and don’t just blindly follow any one man or it will become a dictatorship. Voice your concerns, even if you voted for a man, because if our elected officials don’t know what we want they can’t possibly fight for it!

George Washington was the only President to escape merciless criticism from "the other side".  He was elected and re-elected by a unanimous vote of the electoral college.

Adams and Jefferson were then embarassingly combative with each other; their supporters were often outrageous in their scurrilous attacks on the "other man".

Lincoln, as a freshman congressman, rose on the House floor and said the incumbent president had lied us into (the Mexican) war. (He was right of course -- but immediately defeated for reelection.)

Lincoln and others have been killed for their views and polices.

And so it's gone.

Until 2009:  Now suddenly a President is not to be criticized -- only universally admired.  To criticize him is called hate speech and/or racist behavior.

What rubbish.

Whoever said Americans know their history?  Apparently, half the country can't remember the criticisms aimed at the previous administration.  That only goes back 8-9 years.  Surely they can't be expected to go back a couple hundred years.

Todd, I applaud your stand. Why do we pin the word Racist on anyone who disagrees with the President. There is no free pass when it comes to disagreement. I voted, I deserve the right to disagree.
Make it a great day my friend,
Paul

Outstanding post.  We, as Americans, have the right to criticize our government officials - even the President.  In fact, it is our duty to criticize and take an active part as citizens concerned for the future of our country,

Todd, Yes, thank goodness for free speech! I generally am not political but feel the same way Paul does, I voted so I do have a voice and have a right to my opinion! Great post!

I feel as you do that we all are a part of this country. That's why it disturbs me when I read news articles where elected officials (who should know better) talk about removing states from the union.

There is a difference between criticsm, disrespect, and dangerous and inciteful behavior. Making points based on FACT about things with which you disagree is criticism AND a good thing. Some of the other behavior I have seen is (a) not based on fact (in fact, outright lies) and (b) dangerous to the public as a whole. I compare some of it to shouting "fire" in a crowded theater.

To interpret what Pres Carter said as implying that all criticism of the President is racist is a deliberate twisting of his words.

As an independent person who is proud of my ability to think critically and form my own opinions, I find much to criticize with all politicians, INCLUDING President Obama. As an intelligent, rational person, I am able to back up my opinions with fact. I do not deliberately repeat lies that have been debunked time and time again.

My Father always taught me that absolutely nothing is free. Part of the price we pay for living in this GREAT country is the responsibility to participate in the process by (a) voting, (b) staying informed, and (c) staying involved.

Jimmy Carter wow what can one say that would even begin to explain what an idiot he is. I'm Democrat and to think two of the four I like the most could legally be committed if their families so wanted. Gore and Carter what a disgrace to Democrats.

I worked on a Habitat home with Jimmy Carter and he was a lot of fun, really but he should have never gotten into politics, what is the ole say rather be quiet and let people think than open your mouth and prove it.
