Wordless Wednesday: I can't drive 55 and the cool part is I didn't have too!

80 MPH

The needle was close to pegged

OK, I have to admit I was loving the speed limit in Utah, that is what it should nationwide! I'm glad it isn't any higher though, my speedometer couldn't go any higher.

Todd:  The fastest I have ever driven is 98 miles an hour.  That was back in 1978... and I was driving a motorcycle... a 450 Honda Twin... on a freeway in Cleveland.  Then, I made a mistake.  I looked DOWN... at the roadway... and saw how "quickly" it seemed to be moving by.  Then I thought, or pictured myself hitting some pebbles, and losing control, and sliding down the highway... quickly being turned into what I call "street pizza."  As soon as I got home... I put the bike up for sale... and got rid of it.  Whew !

Sweeeet! I'd probably save a small fortune in traffic tickets if this could be implemented in Kentucky.  BTW-- 213,481 miles??? This is also impressive. What kind of vehicle do you drive?

Todd,

Even allowing 80 they still catch speeders!

When I started driving in Michigan 70 was the limit but 80 was the cruising speed. Of course we drove simpler but safer cars! My first new car I ordered to my own spec's a 350 HP Ford Ranchero with a high speed (low number) rear axel, it got 22/23 mpg cruising at 80, but 12/15 at 55. The only bad thing about it was it demanded premium/ethyl fuel at $0.339 per gallon compared to $0,299 for leaded regular. I miss that car.

80 MPH doesn't really seem that fast when you get on those long open roads!!

Having a lead foot, this looks like a dream highway for me.

Todd, On some of our North Dallas tollway roads they just bumped the speed to 70 mph again which helps out a lot on wide open roads. Never have seen an 80 mph sign but I understand in Montana they have them. Following Karen Anne's thoughts I think I once went 105 mph in someone else's car. Good thing we didn't have a blown out tire in those foolish teenage years.

Todd~ we first noticed 80mph when we were in Wyoming a few months back visiting our daughter. They have not implemented that here. Still sits at 75, but I still push it to 80 or so ....I too have spent a fortune in speeding tickets

Todd....I love the evidence of the speedometer.  Glad you felt that you had to "justify" your photo.

i can't drive 55, Sammy Hagar, early 80's.

I drive a bmw 540i and I can do 80 in 3rd gear(i have 6 gears).

I don't want to get much over 70 at anytime, too scary!

I would enjoy a long open strech of freeway to see if i could get close to the 160mph that says on my speedometer. Not!

Made a trip out to Kansas once and had the needle pegged like that for hours on end. If you crashed there was alot of corn to soften the landing. Didn't put it to the test. When I saw all of the dust on your instrument cluster it reminded me that I need to clean the one in my car.

Todd, The area you drove through is a test area. Anyone travelling over that speed will indeed get a ticket...even if it's 5 over! The best to you!

Todd:

What part of Idaho were you in for this sign shot?

When I had my first car, back in the simpler sixties, we went 80 all the time.  "They" said at the time that the freeway (Interstate 5) had been designed for 80.

The speed limit was 70.  Everybody went 80. It seemed as normal as can be.

Now the speed limit is at most 65 in Oregon.  Prudent speeders don't go over 72 (seven over)...especially with 100 more state troopers on the road.

Today, to me, 80 feels pretty fast.  (Did I just admit to going 80?  Must have been in THAT part of Idaho.)  And the freeway feels like it was designed for 55.

Age will change things like that I guess.  I am 64 today.

That's a riot Todd!  Being a Southern California transplant I am heartened to see an 80mph speed limit.  You sure can't drive 80 mph on most of the freeways in Oregon but at least people will let you in when you need to enter streets and highways.  I got pulled over for going 78 in a 65 mph zone and got off with just a warning.  The state trooper even knew I was from So. Cal. and he was kind enough to think I wouldn't drive that fast again.  I'm trying my hardest not to disappoint him.  Thank you Officer Worthy!

OK, yes that was blast and Wanda I really wish you would have warned us about the speeding thing... (LOL) We made it without trouble though and what vehicle has 213,000 miles on it? That is my trusty 1994 Jeep Cherokee and I have to say it is the best vehicle I've ever owned despite the breakdown on the trip back from Utah.

AND YES THE DASH IS IN THE NEED FOR A GOOD CLEANING! (I drove it on a old dirt road in Utah, just because it looked fun!)
