Living Tigard - Your guide to everything Tigard

Today I needed a new drill, my 15 year old cordless finally died and went to drill heaven, it was time for me to get a new one. So, I drove to the closest store, the local Home Depot that is about 5 miles away. We thought prices might not be the best, but they are convenient and close to some other places we need to go.

So, we arrive, find the drill section and think we found the drill we want. But, when we go to look for it on the shelf below the display, it wasn’t anywhere to be found. After looking around for awhile for some help, I decided to walk up to the front and ask them to send someone over to the drill department. They said sure someone would be there in a couple minutes.

After about 5 minutes, I went back because help had not arrived. They said “Sorry, let me try again to get someone to help you” After another few minutes, I looked again and the girl at the front called again.  After the 4^th time, I started to walk back up with my family and she said “Sorry, that is all I can do!” that is when I said “Oh, that is alright, I understand that is all you can do, I also understand that I can take my business elsewhere” and I proceeded to walk out and drive an additional 10 miles to the Lowe’s. I paid a few dollars more for the drill, but I got help within a minute and without having to ask.

So, despite me writing how great Home Depot’s kids Birthday parties are, I will not be shopping at our local Home Depot again, because I now see how they feel about their customers. If I were the manager that I kept asking for help, I would have just left the customer service desk and helped me myself. But, I guess that was all she could do.

Sounds crazy doesn’t it, but in Portland, if it rains you get a bill and the more it rains the higher the bill. So you can imagine during the rainy winter months a lot of people are itching for it to stop as they watch those pretty storm water utility bills arrive in the mail.

But, what if there was a way to get a discount on this bill, if not eliminate it all together? Well, you are in luck. It seems the City of Portland doesn’t want you to have to pay this bill, they would rather have you work on ways to help eliminate storm water runoff from  your property and help you so you don’t get a bill at all. The call this the clean water services project and with your help you can eliminate water from leaving your property and filling up the city water system which eventually runs in to the rivers and streams.

Now, the best part about eliminating this bill is by doing some things on your property to eliminate your storm water utility bill, is you are also creating way to lower your water bill as well. One of the way s you can help is put water barrels on your property to catch the rain water from your gutters, then you can use that water you captured to water your lawn and garden eliminating the use of any water supplied by the city. So, no you have just eliminated any storm water runoff while at the same time creating your own water source. Talk about a win-win for you and your pocket book!

Sampson is one of the most complete Tyrannosaurus Rex skeletons ever found. This is also one of the first times he has been on Public display and we are lucky enough to have him right here in Portland at O.M.S.I. They also have a paleontology lab where they are also working on other dinosaurs as we speak. (They do more than just display dinosaurs here)

Here is a shot of my son in front of Sampson and as you can see, this isn’t a guy you would want to meet in small enclosed space because he doesn’t look like the sharing type. Sampson was found in Montana and it seems though they have been mostly found in Montana area, but have been found as far north as Canada and as far south as Texas. (I guess you got that stride, it wouldn’t take that long to go that far)

If you are in Oregon, I suggest you check out Sampson, you will be amazed at what you can learn at O.M.S.I. My family and I go about every other month and I can tell you we learn something new each time we go and we end up spending hours there each and every time.

The City of Portland has announced a new iPhone application that you can report problems such a pot holes, flooding, ice, or whatever the problem, directly to the city. It’s called “City of Portland Citizen Reports” and it will be sent to them immediately.

Now, I have to say I’m going to try this new application out on my iPhone and see how quickly the problem that I’ve known about for years, and have complained about for years, gets fixed. So, today I’m taking my iPhone down to the City of Portland, taking a picture of city hall and the council’s chambers, and see if the problem finally gets fixed.

Yep, I think there is a huge problem with the City of Portland and that problem is its mayor and the city council. So do you think this new iPhone application can fix that?

Yesterday was the big day, I got my new Nikon D90 in the mail and I have to say I couldn't sleep. I wanted to take a picture, so I drove some 25 miles in the middle of the night to do it.

Usually when Oregon is mentioned in travel articles, I'm proud to advertise it, because usually they are telling people how great and beautiful Oregon is. But, this article wasn't so nice! Yes, Portland, Oregon, was number four on this list along with another building in Seattle.

So, what was this list? It was a list of the World's Ugliest Building! OUCH! Now, this isn't some off beat place either. It isn't some building built in the corner of Portland where no one would ever see it, oh no. This is the Portland Building, the building where most of the Portland City staff work out of and it was only built about 20 years ago. It is right smack in the middle of Portland on a major street.

So, as we bow our heads, here in Oregon, for having one of the ugliest buildings in the world, I'm going to make it a positive. Come visit our great state, see all the other most beautiful spots we have and just turn your head when you drive by the Portland building and forget that we made that list. (We really are a great place to visit and live!)
