Living Tigard - Your guide to everything Tigard

I love Oregon despite all the reports of rain. Yes, we do seem to get our fair share, but in-between the rain showers we are left with the opportunity to play in some of the most beautiful areas in the world. During these brief but wonderful dry times in the spring, I enjoy taking my kids to parks. (Our summers are mostly dry and sunny though) This one was especially enjoyable for me because I got to tell my kids my story about what I got to see in this park.

This is my story of Metzger Park and then a review of this greatly updated park from a kid’s point of view. Back in late 1991, when I was still a wedding DJ, I was DJ-ing a wedding at Metzger Park, but in the background was something a little strange. There was the front of a house with porch and all, but once you entered the front door, there was nothing but park.

This house was fake, it was part of a movie set and I was on it. There were people everywhere in the park, setting up for something. I decided to ask since this was a 9am wedding and something big was clearly going on here later in the day. Well, it turns out they were filming the horrible horror film “Dr. Giggles” and this was the exact duplicate of the house used in the film.

But, not to give anything away, oh wait, I’m going to anyway just to save you from watching it. At the end of the film, they blow the house up and that is what I was looking at, the house they were going to blow up at the end of the movie. (I do have to say that was pretty cool)

So, after my event was over, I stayed around with permission of course and got to watch the blowing up of “Dr. Giggles” house. Wait, did I just figure out that I didn’t have to watch it either because I knew the end of the movie? DANG IT! Oh, well, it was nice to see a bunch of local attractions in the film and also to know I was on set the day that blew up.

You would think in Oregon, you wouldn’t get a chance to be on a movie set, but this is my 3^rd movie set I’ve been on. The other two were the “The Postman” with Kevin Costner and the other was “The Hunted” with Tommy Lee Jones. Don’t ask how I got on all these sets, because I really don’t know, right place right time. Didn’t even know they were filming, just happen to be there. (OK, with the exception of the “The Postman”. With that one I owned a delivery company at the time and I was delivering the film to the set from the airport.

Now for the review of the park from my kid’s point of view. They loved this park, it had everything they could ask for. The merry-go-round that is taken out of most parks because they are deemed to dangerous, bathrooms, so they could stay for hours and lots of room to play catch if they were tired of the other equipment. I have to say we did stay for a long time on this one and that is very unusual because usually one of the kids does have to go to the bathroom forcing us to leave, but this time we stayed and just walked the 50 feet to the bathrooms.

This park really did have everything you could need as a kids or as an adult. Tennis courts, basketball courts, place to play with a Frisbee or play catch with a ball. This little hidden gem off Hall Blvd in Tigard is well worth the drive and if you live in Tigard, it really isn't a drive at all. It took us 3 minutes from Washington Square mall.

So, if you are a parent and don’t mind your kids risking injury, which personally I think is important for kids to discover the thrill of toys like this one, then this is the park for you. I know we will be going back over and over to this one because my kids loved it!!!
