Last week the boys from my son’s Boy Scout troop and my oldest daughter got to tour Fire Station Number 50 in Tigard, Oregon. Now, I love to learn and I have to say, the one thing that really, really surprise me was the siren that used to sound on the show “Emergency” from the 70s, no longer exists.
So, how to they wake up the fire fighters today if there is a fire? Well, it is an alarm that is quieter and sounds more like a door chime than an alarm to wake people up for an emergency. I asked about this and they said “They did studies and they found this was healthy as the fire fighters weren’t jolted out of bed. We are more alert by being woken up gently than jolted out of our sleeps” If you watch the video below, you can actually hear the alarm.
Now, it takes these guys less than a minute to get ready. (Something I wish I could teach my daughters) They work 24 hours straight and then get two days off, not a bad work schedule, but every time you are called, you could lose your life. These guys are being trained daily and also they exercise daily as required by their job.
Now, this one impressed me the most. They are a family, they work with the same people every time. There are four fridges in the station, three for each group of fire fighters and the forth for condiments. They eat breakfast, lunch and dinner together and they change up who is cooking every time. It really was neat to know that they get a long and like a family, they eat together.
The kids were excited by the trip and learned a lot and hopefully if they are ever in a fire, they now know what to do to help the fire fighters find them if they should get stuck in a burning building. But, they also know that they need to get out and never go back in no matter what.
Thank you Fire Station 50, for making a wonderful field trip for our kids. (It will be something they will remember forever)
