In the early 1900’s Bull Mountain was once an area rich with farm land as you may be able to tell from the two main roads on Bull Mountain. (Bull Mountain Road and Beef Bend Road) Until about the early 1970s, that was almost all you could find on Bull Mountain.
Then, in the early 70’s, the first developments started to show up on Bull Mountain as farmland gave way to housing needs. Though there are still a few farms left off Beef Bend Road, most have gone to upscale housing developments, including two Street of Dreams developments.
How do I know so much about Bull Mountain? I grew up on Bull Mountain as my parents were some of the first to build on the backside of Bull Mountain in 1977. When I grew up, you could ride horses all day and not see another person and even from my own backyard you could take a pair of binoculars and not see another house. (This, at the time, was one of the reasons I loved Bull Mountain.)
Bull Mountain, though it had a Tigard address, wasn’t actually part of Tigard until it was annexed a few years ago by the City of Tigard. This caused a few more taxes to be added to the residences of Bull Mountain, but it also brought a lot more services such as police and fire protection that were a lot farther away than they are now.
Over the years, many more homes have come and the once rich farmland I rode horses on have now become housing communities that I would be proud to live in. So much so that my family just bought a home on Bull Mountain where I know my kids will be able to be safe as it is still one of those areas that everyone knows everyone else and the neighbors are still friendly and watch out for each other.
Though the schools boundaries have changed since I was a kid, now instead of Fowler Middle School, the kids would now go to Twality Middle School. (My brother teaches there and I know he cares about the kids he teaches and you would be lucky to have him as a teacher.) The elementary school is now Alberta Rider, a new school built almost on top of Bull Mountain. (That is where the picture above was actually taken from.) Then the kids would bussed over to Tualatin High School which has a great sports program. (Not as good as Tigard High’s – I only say that because it is my alma mater) Now, all these schools are part of the Tigard-Tualatin school district.
