Living Tigard - Your guide to everything Tigard

Now, I grew up on Bull Mountain in Tigard, Oregon and I had heard stories of farmers, ranchers and cattle which all made sense since I did a lot of horse riding up there when I was younger. (This was long before the housing boom) I promise in the late 70s and 80s there were hundreds of acres of farm land still on Bull Mountain and I rode ever inch of them!

So, yesterday, when I took my kids to my old stomping ground we found something new at a Elizabeth Price Park within all these housing developments. What we found was a little monument that told the story of Bull Mountain and how it really got its name. I actually thought this was pretty cool and I learned a lot.

It seems cattle aren’t native to the United States, but were needed for food and milk. So the first herd in the Pacific Northwest was at Fort Vancouver. But, they were being brought up from California through the Willamette Valley in 1837, a few years before Oregon was even a state.

Well, one of these herds was brought up on a barge on the Tualatin River which passes right by what is now known as Bull Mountain and the entire heard escaped. Now, I guess, it could have been called Cattle Mountain but the entire herd was rounded up except one very stubborn bull. This bull roamed Bull Mountain for many years, alone, grazing on the grass of the mountain and it became known as Bull Mountain after that.

I have to say this story was pretty cool to me and I wish I had known it as a kid, not that it would have changed a thing for me and all those days riding horses around, but it would have a least giving me an answer when I asked how it got its name.

"I Found My Thrill On Blueberry Hill" and I have to say I really am enjoying the results. If you are in Oregon this time of the year then you need to try fresh blueberries in everything from muffins, pancakes, waffles , cookies and my favorite pies.

Though we thought it would never arrive, this last week we actually got to see the sun again. We have now had 7 out of the last 8 days without rain. Now, this may not seem significant to you, but we haven’t had seven days of dry weather in the last six months! I think we had 173 days of rain out of the past 180 days, this sun is needed!

So, what do you do when you get a dry day in Oregon? You get your camera out and take pictures of what has finally arrived… Beautiful flowers! (About 2 months later than normal, but hey at least they arrived)

The making of a friend and a smile is actually something that is very easy and it could be done for a cost of about $20. Build-A-Bear where a child get to pick their friend, fill them with love by adding stuffing a heart and then gets to bath them, cloth them and in less than 20 minutes that bear then can create a smile on a young child’s face. If you have never taken a child or a grandchild, then I suggest you do, they will love you for it, promise!

With all the recent rain here in Oregon, I believe we are at 56 out of the last 65 days, land slides are becoming a huge problem. Especially for those who build upon rivers and mountain sides.

Though they have a great view, the place where they built is slowly being washed away. Now, my parents have been lucky, they have the view, but no signs of errosion yet. Now, their neighbors on the other hand, have loss the use of their deck by order of the county. 

Will their house be there next year at this time? I don't know, but I do feel sorry for them for the amount of money they spent to get the permits and every thing from the county that told them that it would be safe to build there. 

Now to be told they may have to move because of safety concerns. Now, will they get their money back from the county, since they were the ones that told them it was safe to build there? We all know the answer to that!

When you think Tigard, most don’t think Tigard lake view properties, but there are some. Summer Lake Park pictured above is perfect example and then there is another private lake surrounded by homes just north of Walnut Street near 124^th. One of the most important things to a child when it comes to a park is that it is fun! To a parent it is, “can it wear my child out” and these two things are very different indeed. But, Jack Park in Tigard managed to do both with my family.

Swings, basketball, and things to hang on that my kids love! What I love is they are smiling and don’t want to leave, but once they do, you can start to see them fall asleep on the way home! This tells me they got some exercise which is something kids need during the winter months since a lot of the time they become vegetables in front of the TV because of the weather.

In the late 1800s, John Tigard, the son of Wilson Tigard whom Tigard is named after, was a very important person to which to some may be obvious by the naming of the town. But, what amazed me is that his home wasn’t something you would expect from such a figure in the community.

His house was small, perfect for him, his family and their needs. He didn’t need a 3,000 sqft foot home, he should his importance by his actions. How you showing your importance? Is it the car you drive, the house you live in, or will it be your actions you are remembered for?
