Living Tigard - Your guide to everything Tigard

This last week, I took this picture in Tigard, and gee, I can’t figure why business may be down. Do I really want to know the way to the Pagan ritual retreat stop? Is that really the journey I want to go on when I learn to drive? I guess, though, you are getting a two for one deal, you learn to drive and get the Pagan journey for one low price. Wait, can you carpool? Maybe we can get others to pitch in for the road trip? No, wait a second, I’m not going on any journey with someone who is just learning to drive. That sounds way too dangerous!

OK, if you have funny signs, feel free to add yours to the post in the comments and I promise to have more in the upcoming weeks. Since I started thinking about doing this I have come across a few that are perfect for this series.

Our church just had this event that they kids got to play in the water all afternoon and though the kids enjoyed it, it did get rather hot and you could tell some of the kids just wanted to find a way to escape the sun. Well, my son and his friend found away to do that by just relaxing in the $6 kiddy pool and talking. So, I guess sometimes it is even too hot to play! My guess is Monday when we are supposed to hit 100 degrees here, it might just be another one of those days that it will be time to sit in the $6 pool and call it day.

In the 1800’s, Oregon was just a territory and its future was still up in the air. But many man and women took the trek from the east to west coast along the Oregon Trail and one of those men was John McLoughlin who later became a Doctor John McLoughlin.

Doctor John McLoughlin came to Oregon and built Fort Vancouver and later became known as the father of Oregon as he implemented so many trades with the Indians and helped build what Oregon became so well known for.

Doctor McLoughlin owned the general store at the end of the Oregon Trail where many settlers bought or traded for their first supplies upon arriving in the west. But, he is also been reported to have built the first sawmill in the Pacific Northwest, and until the 80’s, that is what drove both Oregon and Washington’s economy.

I was amazed at all this man did in his life. I didn’t realize how much he did for Oregon until we went to the Oregon Trail Interpretive Center in Oregon City, so I decided to look up more information on him and realized that I was still reading some 3 hours later. If you are a kid in school today and want to do a report on a person that you won’t have any problem finding lots of information on, and will make it an easy report for you, I suggest you check out the hardly ever talked about Doctor John McLoughlin. I sure wish I had learned about him in school as he really was a fascinating man and well worthy of the street named after him.

I know, we hear it all the time when someone from somewhere else stops to get gas here in the Beaverton, Oregon real estate market… “WHAT DO YOU MEAN WE CAN’T PUMP OUR OWN GAS?” Yep, we can’t. We aren’t allowed, it is a $500 fine. So, don’t feel bad New Jersey, you aren’t alone!

But, what we do have, and that I actually applaud the government for, and you won’t hear me say that all too often, is open beaches. When you visit California there are certain stretches of beach that the public is not allowed because it is privately owned. But, Oregon has said that not only can no private citizen restrict access to a beach, but we have also passed a law that requires a beach access point be at least every three miles.

Now, how cool is that? If there is a beach and you want to head down and play on the sand in Oregon, pull over, because more than likely you are close to an access point to the beach. Now, you may not want to get into the water as it is too cold, but heck, bring your kite, as more than likely, it will be windy enough to fly it! At two points we were at the coast in July and both times we were wearing sweatshirts because it was cold out!
